Ballarat / Sovereign Hill

After being collected from our pre-arranged departure point we will travel to the Central Highlands of Victoria, part of Australia’s Great Dividing range to Australia’s largest inland city after Canberra- Ballarat. We arrive in. time to see the show at the Great Southern Woolshed, a working shearing shed with specialty shops, working sheep dogs and a 3D laser show.

Ballarat has been called the City of Statues, Historical City, and Garden City, all names that this interesting place can wear. In the 1870s Ballarat had a population of between 50,000 and 65,000 and was the biggest gold city that the world has known. Evidence of how rich the diggings were is left behind in the form of magnificent Victorian architecture, an abundance of statues and impressive parks and gardens.

After a tour through the main part of the city we can capture some of the excitement of the latter part of the 1800s by visiting Sovereign Hill and the Gold Museum. Sovereign Hill is an accurate recreation of a gold town complete with period costumed staff, Cobb and Co. Stage coaches, China town, working steam driven pumps and battery and tours of the gold mine. You might try your luck at panning for gold in the creek or look at the fashions of yesteryear in the main street. There is something for everyone. If time permits we will spend awhile in the botanic gardens before returning home.
